Let me introduce myself...
My name is Steve Bowen and I'm a flashlight enthusiast.
I should have known since I was a little kid, when I was fascinated by my Dad's 'Navy Signal Light'. I'd always been intrigued by flashlights and their simplicity, but my Dad's light was something else. I have no idea of the specs of this particular light...and it doesn't matter since I destroyed it in my teen years trying to 'mod' it. But the feeling never left me...a laser-beam of light, able to touch the clouds at my command...what a simple thrill! The fascination never left me either, as I can remember working in a retail store warehouse and drooling over Maglites when they first appeared in the early 80's.
It wasn't until I found message boards full of fellow flashlight hobbyists several years ago that I realized flashlights were more than just cheap toys...that they were high-tech collectibles and sophisticated tools for professionals. But more than that, they were the perfect interest area for someone like myself who can no longer engage in more physically demanding hobbies. And so here I am now, trying to find (and fill) a niche in the world of flashlights.
In all honesty, when we started the first pages for Flashlight-Forums.org (the original name for this site), we envisioned a simple directory of flashlight-related websites...nothing more.
But the more we worked on the site, the more potential we saw to do something unique among flashlight websites. We saw the possibility of a news, information, and resource site for flashlight enthusiasts and industry insiders. A site that would bridge the gap between flashlight-related message boards, flashlight review sites, personal hobby pages, and the manfacturers and retailers who fuel them. In short, a site that would serve existing flashlight constituencies and, at the same time, help raise awareness of the flashlight industry with the general public.
Now, after nearly two years of publishing FlashlightNews, we know that this site is filling a need that has been neglected for some time. The internet provides a unique opportunity for previously unconnected hobbyists and enthusiasts, and an equally unique opportunity for flashlight manufacturers and dealers, to come together in a way that was previously impossible. It is our sincere hope that the FlashlightNews can continue to grow and help raise awareness of the many shapes and forms that 'flashlights' can take.
Of course, for this site to continue to grow and serve all who are interested in flashlights and other portable lighting devices, we need the involvement of both individual enthusiasts, and the manufacturers and dealers who cater to them. We simply can't do it alone...we rely on people like you.
Whether it's sending a press release or news item for us to publish, voting in a online poll, joining and posting to our online forum (FlashlightNews Forums), or simply visiting the site on a regular basis, we must continuously rely on you to decide if this site is the good idea we think it is. And we thank you for your interest and partcipation.
