At a length of only four inches, and a weight of 2.8 ounces, the Backup doesn’t take up much space in a pocket or weigh down a duty belt. Its virtually indestructible, dual-output light emitting diode (LED) delivers two useful light levels: 80 lumens of blinding white light on high; 5 lumens of useful light at its low setting. The extremely efficient Backup delivers maximum output for 1.3 hours of tactical-level light (enough to temporarily overwhelm an aggressor’s night-adapted vision) and offers useful light levels (sufficient to write a citation or navigate a dark path) for an impressive 37 hours on a single SureFire lithium battery.
“We wanted to create a light for our customers that wear a suit every day while making that same product purposeful for a law enforcement officer to wear on their duty belt,” says Matthew Hemenez, Director of Product Management. “The officer could immediately utilize the Backup if a primary light is not available or no longer useful.”
The Backup’s two-stage, click-on/off tailcap is programmed to deliver all 80 of its lumens when fully depressed because, in high-stress situations where seconds count, there is no time to fumble for a switch to get maximum power. Inside the bezel is SureFire’s patented TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lens which is sealed beneath a durable Pyrex® window and it’s O-ring sealed to keep dust, dirt, and moisture out. The Backup also comes with a two-way pocket clip, which lets a user carry it bezel up or down, depending on personal preference.
