DC-DC Converters target portable consumer electronics, reduce PCB size and cost

DALLAS, Tx. - Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD), a leading global manufacturer and supplier of high-quality application specific standard products within the broad discrete and analog semiconductor markets, has announced the first in a series of high efficiency synchronous DC-DC converters specifically targeting portable consumer electronics.

The AP6714 boost and AP6015 buck converters offer high switching frequencies that help reduce circuit inductor and capacitor size, resulting in smaller PCBs and a lower component cost.

The maximum switching frequencies of the boost and buck converters are 2.2MHz and 1.2MHz, respectively. Their high typical efficiency of 94% combined with a low quiescent current of 150microampere extends battery life and improves overall system performance. Both devices are packaged in the small footprint MSOP-10L format and integrate N- and P-channel power MOSFET switches. The converters are industrial temperature range rated at -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.

With an adjustable output voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V, the AP6714 boost converter is readily scaled to match multiple application requirements and can produce a drive current of up to 1.4A. Its 0.9V to 5.5V operating input voltage range also means it can support all 1-cell to 3-cell alkaline, NiCd, NiMh or single cell lithium batteries.

Similarly, the 2V to 5.5V input range of the AP6015 buck converter makes it ideal for use with 1 Cell Lithium and 2-3 cell NiCd or NiMH batteries. Capable of driving up to 800mA the highly flexible AP6015 is also offered with a choice of fixed output voltages (1.8V, 2.5V or 3.3V) or an adjustable output voltage (0.8V to Vin) enabling it to meet a broad range of portable I/O and core voltage needs.

To guard against high inrush current and output voltage overshoot, both converters include an internal soft start function which controls start-up current for a 1ms duration. For additional protection, the AP6714 boost converter adds an overcurrent protection feature which prevents the converter from overloading when connected to ground. For power monitoring or sequencing, the AP6015 buck converter also offers a 'power good' indication pin.
