Osram Opto Announces New Golden DRAGON Infrared LED

SAN JOSE, Ca. -- Osram Opto Semiconductors have announced the development of a new version of their Golden DRAGON line of high-brightness LEDs. The new infrared (IR) Golden DRAGON is the first IR, high-brightness LED to be offered in a surface-mount technology (SMT) package.
The company has used its proprietary, thin-film Golden DRAGON technology to develop the new 850 nanometer IR LED emitter. OSRAM's unique thin-film technology enables the new LED to emit light from the top surface of the die, and utilizes an integrated reflector to maximize light output.
According to the company, lighting applications which require high lumen output, compact design and increased energy efficiency are a likely destination for the new LEDs.
In addition, Osram's thin-film architecture is, according to the company, 'scaleable', allowing for increased chip size without the accompanying loss of usability seen previously available LED designs.
Optimized for CCD and CMOS camera applications, Osram's's IR Golden DRAGON will be marketed to makers of automotive night-vision systems and for security system illumination.
Ellen Sizemore, North American director of Osram's LED and IR Products Group explains, "Night vision systems in automobiles enable us to see and avoid obstacles that before were obscured. IR illumination for security applications provides increased confidence and well-being. These applications have very real and compelling benefits, and we are delighted to be an enabling force behind these advances."
OSRAM's thin-film chip technology is said to provide increased optical output, better optical coupling, lower forward voltages and improved thermal performance compared with previous chip construction. Conventional LED chip technologies utilize creative structures with the drawback of side emission losses that can reduce the light output and reduce thermal performance.
Production quantities will be available in March 2006 for $5.00 U.S. in 1,000-unit quantities.
